Brendon Babb tossed a pair of touchdowns and Skiatook’s defense smothered Hale for the second year in a row Friday in a 37-0 win in the District 5A-3 opener for both teams.
Skiatook, who scored all its points in the first half, improved to 4-0, 1-0 on the year while Hale, who lost 63-0 last year to the Bulldogs, remains winless at 0-4, 0-1.
“It was great to get our first district win tonight and this is great momentum to carry into next week, playing Shawnee,” Skiatook coach Vance Miller said. “That will be a tough district game so we will just have to get ready for them.”
The Bulldog defense held Hale to four first downs, 65 rushing yards and minus-1 passing yards. In four games, Skiatook’s defense is allowing less than six points per game.
Skiatook led 13-0 after one quarter as senior receiver Jaren Knight caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Babb and junior Shae Garner scored on a 29-yard run.
The Bulldogs, who rushed for 360 yards, scored 24 points in the second quarter, highlighted by DeAngelo Henderson’s 54-yard punt return for a touchdown.
The second half was all about getting the younger members of the Skiatook roster experience, and the team played deep into their roster. Both teams went scoreless, but there was impressive play from a number of young Bulldogs.
“They work hard and fight hard on every play, so it was a great win. It was nice to get so many people involved,” Henderson said.
