DURANT — Skiatook got a 52-yard touchdown catch on the third play of the game from Don’Tray Wilkerson and a defensive stand to end the game to escape Friday with a 14-7 win at Durant to remain unbeaten.
Durant had two chances from the Skiatook 3-yard line in the final second, but couldn't score.
A Lions touchdown, a 3-yard run by quarterback Layton Tubbs, was nullified by a holding penalty. Then, Durant (3-5 overall, 2-3 in District 5A-3) failed to score on the game's final play, preserving the Bulldog victory. However, the officials conferred over a penalty on the last play before signaling the game's end.
It was the second time that Durant nearly scored in the game's final five minutes.
The Lions drove to the Skiatook 20-yard line, before turning the ball over on downs with 4:30 left.
With the win, Skiatook remains the only unbeaten team in 5A-3 with an 8-0, 5-0 mark.
Wilkerson’s touchdown was the only score for either team in the first quarter, but Brendon Babb threw an eerily-similar deep bomb to Wilkerson early in the second, which set up a 1-yard touchdown Shae Garner and a 14-0 lead for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs defense contained Durant for the entire half, turning every single yard into a battle, despite the impressive mobility and arm of Tubbs. One of the biggest stories of the second quarter was the unfortunate injury of Laben Fisher, the team’s very talented kicker.
With the first drive of the third quarter, Durant finally seemed to solve the puzzle of the Bulldogs defense, scoring and cutting into the lead, 14-7. It began raining at this time as well, which would be a limiting factor in the aerial attack for both teams throughout the rest of the game.
Next Friday, Skiatook hosts No. 5 Bishop Kelley on Senior Night.
