COLLINSVILLE — A year ago, Collinsville slammed the door on the Skiatook Bulldogs with a two-score victory on Skiatook’s home turf. Friday night at Sallee Field, the Bulldogs reversed fortunes on Collinsville and took back the Highway 20 Bowl trophy. By a dreary score of 10-3, No. 5 Skiatook eliminated No. 10 Collinsville and moved on with the District 5A-4 title. This is the first time Collinsville has missed the playoffs since 2010. Tailback T.K. Wilkerson, a Tulsa commit, said his team came to town with one thing in mind. “We came for the Highway 20 Bowl trophy,” Wilkerson said. From the start, this was a running back’s game to win. Sophomore Jayden Garner’s 19-yard go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter was the longest play from scrimmage in the second half. Collinsville (5-5, 4-3) intercepted Skiatook’s first pass attempt on the opening drive then conducted an 18-play drive in the first quarter. The possession took 8:15 off the clock and bled into the second quarter, where Skiatook shut it down with a goal-line stand. The Bulldogs (9-1, 7-0) then ran off their own 18-play drive, capping it with Derek Eckenfels’ 30-yard field goal to take a 3-0 halftime lead. Combined, there were nine pass attempts in the first 27 minutes. Wilkerson ran the ball 22 times for 71 yards, and Garner had eight carries for 60 yards and Skiatook’s lone touchdown. Skiatook avoided punting the ball in the first half. Its opening drive ended with Collinsville’s defensive back Walker Roberts’ interception at the Cardinals’ 3-yard line. Carson Cole then sacked Korey Miller for a 13-yard loss to force a turnover on downs on the next drive, and the fourth possession ended as the first-half clock expired. The lights went out at halftime for a neon-lit performance by Collinsville’s marching band, and any chance at a passing game for these teams remained lost in the dark the rest of the way. Skiatook took its first lead on Eckenfels’ field goal in the second quarter, then Jaxson Dohn recovered a Collinsville fumble on the next play. The Bulldogs went up 10-3 in the third quarter on Garner’s 19-yard TD burst. “This game had to be won in the trenches,” Dohn said. “Linemen, big men, they were gonna win this one, because it was such a big game.” Collinsville’s best chance at tying the game came with 4:26 left and the ball at their 48-yard line. Malcolm Tillman splintered the defensive line for 16 yards on the next play — Collinsville’s biggest gain — and the Cardinals looked ready to tie it. A last-ditch attempt on fourth-and-12 was short, though, and Miller took a knee to end the game.
