The 5A #6 Skiatook Bulldogs hosted the 4A #2 Vinita Hornets on December 19th. The Bulldogs are coming off an impressive start by winning their first two duals and a second-place finish at the Joe Cole Classic as a team. The dual started off slow for Skiatook by giving up three pins in the first three matches and falling behind by eighteen points. The Skiatook grapplers would fight back and make it close, but the Bulldogs were not able to make a comeback as they eventually gave up three more falls by the end of the dual and lost 42 to 27.

Up first for Skiatook was 106lb Kyle Bowman (Fr. 4-3) wrestling against Vinita’s D. Brown. Brown pinned Bowman late in the second period at the 1:44 mark.

At 113lbs for the Bulldogs was Trey Bowman (Jr. 4-3). Bowman was pinned in the first period by Vinita’s A. Price.

Erik Hoffman (Fr. 2-4) was Skiatook’s next wrestler. The 120-pound grappler was pinned by K. Ornder in the first period making the dual score 0 to 18.

The Bulldogs finally got a breath of fresh air as 126lb Josh Taylor (Fr. 6-1) was able to dominate Vinita’s M. Frappe. Taylor took down Frappe three times for six near fall points and a pin at the 1:45 mark of the first period. Skiatook was on the score board 6 to 18.

Skiatook’s Tyler Garret (Fr. 1-3) wrestled at 132lbs against Vinita’s T. Brown. The score was 0 to 0 at the end of the first period but the Hornet turned it on and was able to pin the Bulldog late in the third period. Brown was able to add more bonus points and extended the visitors lead again by 18 making the dual score 6 to 24.

The duals 138lb bout brought up Skiatook’s Cale Glover (So. 3-3) wrestling against Vinita’s G. Edwards. Glover dominated Edwards as he was able to get two take downs and four near fall points in the first period. The second and third periods were a repeat of the first as the mighty Bulldog took down the Hornet five more times getting a technical fall for the Bulldogs. With Glover’s bonus point win, Skiatook moved a little closer making the dual score 11 to 24.

Cougar Andersen (Fr. 5-2) was the next Bulldog to step out on the mat. The 138-pound wrestler battled Vinita’s L. Enyart for three periods taking down the Hornet four times and escaping once. Enyart tried to make the match interesting as he head locked Andersen in the third period for a two point take down. Cougar was able to escape and win the match 9-6 making the dual score 14 to 24.

At 152lbs Austin Johnson (Sr. 9-1) wrestled the Hornet’s D. Campbell. The Bulldog controlled the match all three periods taking down Campbell six times and winning by a major decision 15 to 5. With that bonus point win the Bulldogs moved a little closer making the dual score 18 to 24.

Skiatook’s 160lb Hunter Hall (Fr. 8-2) fought hard but was pinned midway in the second period by Z. Wattenburger.

Blake Watkin’s (Jr. 5-3) battled with Vinita’s J.M. Floyd. The two grapplers went toe to toe for the entire 6 minutes. Watkin’s was winning 8 to 7 with seconds left when he was able to extend his lead with a buzzer beater take down. The Bulldog’s 10 to 7 win made the dual score 21 to 30.

Skiatook’s 182 pounder Brian Pollard (Fr. 6-3) wrestled against A. Hicks. The two grapplers battled hard for all three rounds with the score 3 to 1 in favor of Hicks late in the third period. Pollard eventually got pinned on a last second takedown attempt but slipped and could not complete it.

Johnathon Martin wrestled at 195lbs against Vinita’s B. Miller. The Hornet won by decision 2 to 8. Vinita with that decision was able to lock up the win making the dual score 21 to 39.

At 220lbs Korbin McLaughlin locked up with J. Gibmors. McLaughlin made short time of the Hornet pinning him in just thirty-eight seconds in the first period.

Heavy Weight Dylon Carnagey wrestled J.D. Hicks for the last match of the night. Carnagey came up a little short and lost 0 to 2. The final dual score was 21 to 42.

The next wrestling action for the Bulldogs will be at the Jenks Tournament January 5th and 6th. The JV will be traveling to the Inola Tournament on January 5th and 6th.
