Skiatook was too much for the Sperry Pirates, unleashing a stellar homecoming performance against a top-5 ranked team to win 49-15. The Bulldogs wrestling team came into the dual with the Sperry Pirates in the middle of one of their best seasons in years. After a homecoming celebration where Courtney McNeal was named Homecoming queen, the wrestling festivities began. The boys, currently ranked #6 in Class 5A, have gone 5-1 this far in the season, had been dominating ranked opponents all year long. Some notable wins include a 41-23 defeat of 6A #9 Owasso, and also handily defeating 5A opponents like McAlester, East Central, and Claremore. But for the homecoming matchup against the Pirates, the Bulldogs had their work cut out for them. The Pirates entered the dual 4-1 and ranked #4 in Class 3A. That didn’t matter at all for Skiatook. Kyle Bowman was electrifying. Wresting at 106, he started the dual off right for the Bulldogs, pinning his opponent in the third period, earning 6 points for Skiatook. At 113, Trey Bowman won his match 9-2, scoring 3 more for the team. Eric Hoffman, at 120 pinned his opponent in less than 40 seconds, and that sent Skiatook up to a 15-0 lead. Josh Taylor continued the streak for Skiatook, dominating his opponent at 126 with a final of 11-1, adding 4 more points to the Bulldogs overall score. At 138, Cale Glover landing a pin late in the second period. Freshman Cougar Andersen was a sparkplug, pinned his opponent with 1:22 left in the second. Skiatook was up 37-0 by the end of Andersen’s match. Hunter Hall narrowly lost at 152, 2-0, giving the Pirates their first 3 points of the night. Brian Pollard was locked in an intense 1-1 match at the 160 weight. It went into extra minutes, and Pollard ended up losing 2-1 in hard fought match. Sperry earned 3 points, bringing the score to 37-6. Blake Watkins scored another 6 for Skiatook with a pin in the 170 match, stretching the team lead to 43-6. Alex “Red” Johnson wrestled at 182 for Skiatook. He trailed 0-1 at the end of the first, but a takedown in the second period gave him a 2-1 lead. A high-scoring third gave him Johnson an 8-3 win, a good night for the freshman. Korbin McLaughlin, in the 195 match, won convincingly to score 3 more points for Skiatook. John Martin, at 220, fell in a 3-0 hole at the beginning of the match. He tried to make a comeback in the third period but it was not quite enough, going on to lose 3-1. In the final match of the night, the heavyweight match, Dylon Carnagey was pinning and the Pirates scored 6. Regardless of class, it’s always important to perform well against ranked opponents, and against Sperry, the Bulldogs did just that and showed they are a legitimate shot to make a long post-season run.
