With a trip to the playoffs on the line, the Skiatook Bulldogs (7-3, 4-3 District 5A-4) took care of the East Central Cardinals (4-6, 2-5 District 5A-4) to lock up a trip to the playoffs behind two receiving touchdowns from Nick Rutledge. The first half was very uncomfortable for Bulldogs fans. East Central scored an early touchdown and Skiatook fell into a hole for the entire half, unable to put up any points and turning the ball over multiple times. In the second half, Skiatook finally found some offense. Nick Rutledge, the senior, hauled in two touchdowns and helped Skiatook get up 13-7—a lead they road to the end of the game. To start, East Central wasted no time in getting points on the board, and their opening-drive touchdown was the only score that came for the entire first half for either team. The drive was full of penalties in both directions, but East Central managed to score on a short quarterback keeper and go up 7-0 with 6:36 left in the first. On Skiatook’s opening drive, Greydon Jackson had a 22-yard run to get the ball deep in East Centrals territory, but Skiatook failed to score. East Central put together a good drive, but Jaxson Dohn came up with a huge interception on a screen pass that saved the Cardinals from scoring. However, the Bulldogs did not take advantage of the turnover, stalling out and punting. The second quarter was scoreless, as both teams struggled to gain traction and maintain possession. Skiatook fumbled twice and East Central’s interception kept both teams scoreless. The second half started out looking a lot like the first, but Skiatook finally found a little offense. The first touchdown for the Bulldogs came on a 16-yard pass from Cody Evans to Nick Rutledge, two seniors connecting for a huge touchdown on senior night to tie the game. With the game tied and the fans coming back to life, Skiatook’s defense came up with another huge stop and set the offense up for a late touchdown on a double-pass—Evans threw a backwards pass to Brian Pollard, who threw a short touchdown to Rutledge and gave Skiatook a 13-7 lead. East Central tried to mount a comeback as the clock wound down, but ultimately fell short. The Bulldogs will be on the road for the first round of playoffs next week, facing Bishop Kelley on the road.
