The Skiatook Bulldogs are the 5A State Wrestling Champions for 2019!

Wrestlers Josh Taylor, Cougar Andersen and Korbin McLaughlin are state champions in their weight classes.

The Bulldogs ended up on the top of the podium tied with Collinsville at 137 points for each team. The two schools will share the State Championship team title. Piedmont and MacArthur tied with 92 points to round out the top teams.

The Bulldogs crowned three individual State Champions:

Josh Taylor — 126 pounds

Cougar Andersen — 152 pounds

Korbin McLaughlin — 220 pounds

The Bulldogs also had two runner-ups, Cody Francis at 132 pounds and Richie Lee at 160 pounds.

Hunter Hall places third at 170 pounds.

In fourth place were Trey Bowman at 113 pounds, Tony Johnson at 145 pounds and Devin Wilson at 195 pounds.

The wrestling team had an amazing year. They went 13-0 in the duals, were the 5A District Champions, the 5A Dual State Champions, 5A East Regional Team Champions and 5A State Team Champions.

Coach Jake Parker said, “The success of this team has shows their resiliency. We had a few struggles early in the season and they just kept fighting. I cant say enough about their strive to do better and to compete the best they can. They achieve success by hard work and good work ethics. They come in to practice every day ready to get better. They put a lot of work in all year to get to where they are today.”

“To be a champion it takes heart, determination, will power, a good mindset, and motivation. They all had the heart and the mindset of what they wanted to accomplish at the end of the year,” Parker said.

The team placed nine of the ten wrestlers at state and for the two senors competing for their last high school season, it was a memorable one.

“We have two seniors on the team this year Trey Bowman and Korbin McLaughlin, I cant say enough as to how much they contributed to the success of this year,” Coach Parker said. “Korbin had placed at state twice before finally winning it all this season and finished the season 38 — 2. Trey Bowman had qualified to the state tournament once before placing this year. He has work for 4 years to achieve this moment and it was a feel good moment for us as coaches when he achieved this goal. Both young men have great personalities and are great to be around.”

Coach Parker would like to thank the community, the school administration and their families for all the support this season.

“It takes a lot of time and effort on everyone’s behalf to accomplish what we have accomplished this year and there is absolutely no way that any of this would have happened with out them. I just want them to know that I was blessed to get to be beside them at all the duals and tournaments,” Parker said.
